“In 2010, 1.9 million people aged 20 years or older were newly diagnosed with diabetes in the United States.”
Operation Diabetes is a patient care project that strives to educate patients about diabetes. We can make a difference in patient care by increasing diabetes awareness and educating the public about risk factors and the importance of medication adherence. We have the ability to highlight the important role of the pharmacist in managing diabetes. By acting as a patient advocate to educate the community, we can empower patients to take an active role in their health. To reach this goal, Operation Diabetes holds screenings throughout the Gainesville community to promote diabetes awareness. Student pharmacists are able to provide free glucose tests and work with patients to assess diabetes risk factors and counsel on medications. As future pharmacists, our patients will rely on our knowledge and compassion to guide them and help them understand this complex condition.
